FAQs

General Questions

How does CampusCom work?

CampusCom uses communications (voice, fax etc.) that are transported over the internet to give you the best quality & price in Home Phone Service. Check the How it Works section for a more detailed explanation.

Do I need Internet for this service?

Yes! You absolutely must have an internet connection to subscribe to CampusCom and it should be a high speed connection. Generally, we recommend you have at least 200 kpbs upstream and downstream available just to make calls. Contact our sales department for more info on which internet service will suit your VOIP needs the best.

Do I need a new phone?

No! You can use the phones you already have to use our service. However, if you have a larger house it is recommended that you have a portable phone system with multiple phones (master and slaves). One of these phones can be connected to the ATA and the others simply need to be connected to a power source to make calls.

Can I keep my previous phone number?

Yes you can keep your old phone number. However, there is a fee ($25, the cost to us) to make the transfer from your current provider and some documentation will be required. Please contact our sales or accounts department for more information regarding keeping your existing phone number. It will take anywhere from 1-3 weeks to complete the process. It is important NOT to cancel your current service until the number has been transfered to CampusCom. We will let you know once the number has been transfered and you can then cancel your previous service.

How is the quality of your phone service?

Our telephone connections are crystal clear with very little problems. However, our service does rely on your internet service. Having a faster internet connection will allow you to perform more internet-related tasks simultaneously (surfing, downloading, playing games, making CampusCom calls etc.). For example, we don't recommend using our service on a dial up internet connection.

Do I need an internet router to use your service?

No. The equipment we offer can act as a router (SPA2102). So you can connect it from your internet (modem) to the ATA and out from there to your computer or wireless router. This allows you to surf and talk at the same time!

Can I have multiple phone lines with CampusCom?

Yes! Our equipment will allow you to have up to 2 lines for every ATA device that you purchase. Please let us know on ordering if you would like a second line to be configured for your device.

Where is your service available?

While we are based in Ottawa, our service is available throughout Canada, the United States, and anywhere your government does not restrict the use of voice over internet services (e.g. Not allowed in Ethiopia).

Can I choose my phone number?

At the moment we can either transfer your current number to our service ($25 fee, the cost to us) or provide you with a telephone number in one of our service regions. As long as you are in one of our service regions, we can provide you with a telephone number. You can choose from a list of numbers we have to offer.

Can I get CampusCom for my cell phone?

Yes! Most often we will be able to provide you with service on your cell phone. We highly recommend purchasing a SIP enabled cell phone such as the Nokia E or N series (a list of compatible Nokia phones can be found on the support page) as the quality is much better. However, other phones will use our services through phone application software (such as Fring), when compatible. Remeber that cell phone services provided by CampusCom can only be used when in a wifi hotspot, often campuses, cafes and other spaces have wifi coverage if you obtain a logon/password. While they will also work when you are connected to a G3 (Rogers, Bell, etc) data network, charges do apply from your primary cell phone service provider. Check out our package page for more information regarding CampusCom cell phone rates and the support page for links to Fring and see if your phone is compatible.

Telephone Accounts and Sales

What equipment do I need to sign up?

You will need an Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) and an internet connection for our service to work with your regular telephone. We prefer if you buy the ATAs from us as they are preconfigured to work well with our service. We do our best to keep the cost competitive and to only use the best equipment (Linksys SPA2102 & PAP2T). You will have to have your own high speed internet service. Call our sales department for recommendations on what type of internet service is best.

What is the cost of installing the service?

There is absolutely no cost to install CampusCom service! There is, however, a one time fee of $1 to register each new telephone number. Instructions & diagrams can be found on the support page to make installation a breeze!

Where do I sign up for CampusCom?

Please sign up by clicking the sign up tab at the top of this page or by calling us. After filling out and submitting the forms we will get in touch with you to arrange telephone packages and help you with any other questions/concerns. The sign up process usually takes about 1 week from filling the forms to making telephone calls with CampusCom!

Why are CampusCom's rates in US Dollars? Isn't it a Canadian Company?

CampusCom deals in US Dollars as our supply chain (which is optimized to save you money) requires us to. We hope to change that, but for the meantime it's US dollars we're dealing with. But the loonie's strong, so no worries, right?

How do I make Payments to CampusCom?

All payments to CampusCom are made through Paypal, a secure online method of payment in which you can choose to pay with your credit card or from your bank account. So you will need a Paypal account to use CampusCom. Topping up your account is extremely easy and can all be done after signing in to your account (click on Sign In link above).

What are your operating hours?

Generally we are open 24 hours. If you are unable to reach someone by telephone, feel free to email us (addresses on the contact page) or try our live chat support.

Does CampusCom have a return/refund Policy?

Yes! We do strive to ensure you're satisfied with our service and if we can't get it to work, we don't expect you to keep it or pay for it! If you are having continued problems with your service, which are not caused by your internet or third party issues, please contact our Accounts department and we will work with you to make everything right. If you are experiencing a manufacturing defect with your device, you may be able to return it for repair or exchange, in such a case contact our Tech Support department.
